In general words RED5 technology is open source software similar to FMS. Its build on java.The big thing is that its free. You can check technical differences on this link:

Red 5 is free media server similar to FMS and WOWZA server. Unlike FMS its server side coding needs to in java, other that that the basic features are same as FMS. FMS is always a step ahead since its ADOBE's product and you can expect support from them. You can look for the features required by you and decide which product to go for. There is no risk in RED5 since its free :)
